Bitcoin Rodney Pleads Guilty in $1.8B HyperFund Crypto Fraud Case
Miami-based cryptocurrency promoter Rodney Burton, known as "Bitcoin Rodney," admitted guilt for his involvement in the HyperFund scheme, a $1.8 billion fraudulent operation. The plea was entered in federal court on June 16, with U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes leading the announcement alongside IRS and HSI officials.
Burton, 56, confessed to conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. His companies, masquerading as consulting firms, laundered investor funds—including victims in Maryland—while he personally profited at least $7.85 million.
HyperFund lured investors with promises of 0.5%-1% daily returns from fictitious crypto mining operations. The scheme collapsed in 2021 when withdrawals were frozen, leaving a trail of losses across its 2020-2022 lifespan.
